CLTP Program Assistant

Hi, I'm the Program Assistant in the Community Library Training Program! I've been working for the Public Library Services Branch in Victoria since October 2007. Before that, I masqueraded as an English teacher for two years in the Land of the Rising Sun. I've had the pleasure of working in three very different library systems -- GVPL, FVRL, and TNRDLS. In CLTP, I help out as best I can with all the nitty-gritty stuff like course administration and registration, student records, web site maintenance, and nuclear waste disposal. When I'm not pushing pencils, I like to read historical fiction, eat sushi, armchair coach the Vancouver Canucks, and play tennis with my good friend Andre Agassi. If you've got any general questions about the Program or registration process, I'll be happy to answer them!

Hilary Bloom

Squamish, BC
Course: 104
I'm Hilary Bloom, co-tutor of CLTP 104: Library Services for Children. I live in Squamish with my husband and our almost two-year-old daughter, Kylie. We love being outside, whether we're hiking, skiing, biking, or playing in our backyard. We also love to travel, and have had great trips this year to Europe, Hawaii and eastern Canada! When I'm not busy having fun with my family, I'm busy having fun in my part-time job at the Squamish Public Library. I am the deputy director and I job-share the children's librarian position. This is my second year tutoring CLTP 104, and I'm looking forward to it!

Maureen Davidson

Cranbrook, BC
Course: 203
Hi, I've been tutoring the most challenging and rewarding CLTP course offered since 2004. This, along with my work at College of the Rockies in Cranbrook, a husband, and four grown kids, keeps me busy and happy. My library experience began as a student at the University of Lethbridge, shelving books and running circulation on weekends. Through the years I've had the opportunity to use a typewriter to make catalogue cards and work in university, college, school and public libraries using card, microfiche and online catalogues. After a brief stint working in a public library in Australia, I completed my BLS at the University of Alberta. A real highlight of my career was teaching technical services courses at Grant MacEwan College's Library Technician Program, including teaching cataloguing and acquisitions courses in front of a camera, for the benefit of correspondence students.

Barb Dean

Prince George, BC
Courses: 104, 204
I am a professional librarian with many years of experience working in public libraries, including a brief employment with the Vancouver Public Library, and a very long employment with the Prince George Public Library. Since leaving the latter, I have returned to my passion -- working with children, teens, and books. I am a book pusher! When I am not reading books, library review journals, book blogs, or listservs, I am reading to my granddaughters. I am an enthusiastic round and square dancer, and also love to sing and exercise -- NIA is my current favourite -- though jogging has been a source of pleasure the length of my library career. I have been a CLTP tutor since 2004.
I eat MARC tags for breakfast.

Carol Elder

Vancouver, BC
Course: 203
I've been working in libraries for many years, most recently at Langara College as Chair of the Library & Information Technology Program where I teach technology and media cataloguing courses. Over the years I've had experience in academic, public and special libraries, starting my career as a library technician, then getting my MLS from the University of Alberta. I was very involved with the CLTP 203 cataloguing course a number of years ago, and it's really nice to be involved again. When not talking or teaching about libraries I am living in Vancouver with my husband and cat, cycling, hiking, reading, and thinking about gardening but rarely following through!
If the chair's unfit, you must acquit!

I am one of the tutors of the 202 course on Legal Information Sources and also the Project Coordinator for the LawMatters Project at the BC Courthouse Library. See more information at the BC LawMatters project blog. I live in a cohousing community, and other interests include distance swimming, graphic novels and going to live theatre.

Nancy Hannum

Vancouver, BC
Courses: 202, 302
Hi, I am a slightly retired librarian who tutors the Aboriginal Reference & Information course and the Legal Reference course. My past includes working at the Legal Resource Centre for 24 years and I am still the chair of the BCLA First Nations Interest Group. In 2003/04 I travelled throughout BC doing library workshops on QP Legaleze in 14 communities for PLSB. I love BC and visiting all those communities and beautiful places. I am also pleased to be working with my co-tutor Janet Freeman on the new LawMatters project which has picked up the work we did earlier at the Legal Resource Centre. Meanwhile, I like visiting New Mexico, and doing the retired part which involves reading and hiking and friends .

Dawn Ibey

Vancouver, BC
Courses: 101, 102, 103
Hi. I'm Dawn Ibey and I have been tutoring courses with PLSB since the age of paper. That's right, I taught these courses by correspondence initially. Thankfully, they are now online which really helps create a nice class atmosphere. My day job is with the Vancouver Public Library. My current title is Manager, Business and Science and my office is located in the Central Library. Prior to this I was located in one of our larger branches. I've been with VPL for about 15 years and in that time I've had a variety of jobs ranging from Children's librarian to Multicultural Services Coordinator. In my spare time I enjoy running, yoga, snowboarding, biking and of course reading. I'd be misrepresenting myself here if I didn't admit to enjoying some pretty schlocky television as well. Over the years I've learned a lot about B.C. public libraries from the students who take these courses, and want you to know that I really value your input. Enjoy the courses!
Y'all take this course now, ya hear?

Sabina Iseli-Otto

Gagliano Island, BC
Course: 102
I am a free-range librarian living in the Gulf Islands. Though I'm originally from Alberta, I've been working with libraries in B.C. since 2007. I've also spent a few years working with small and rural libraries in Alberta, and also put in a stint as a reference librarian at the Ottawa Public Library. I love my dog, I love my books, and I love being able to work from a laptop. When not in front of my computer working on CLTP or the Teen Reading Club (for which I'm the co-coordinator), you can probably find me looking into tide pools.

David Karppinen

Burnaby, BC
Courses: 101, 102
Hello, I'm a relatively new librarian, having completed my Master of Science (Information Studies) degree in 2004. I was born in the US and spent time after graduation in Finland. I had worked in public and academic libraries earlier and it had always been my dream to complete my degree. Prior to going back to school, I had worked as a teacher. I am currently working full-time at Capilano University in North Vancouver in an administrative position but also work part-time as a librarian for the province-wide AskAway virtual reference service. I completed my library degree online over three years through Florida State University (one of the ALA accredited online programs), while working full-time. As a result, I know first-hand what CLTP students go through - working full-time, managing family responsibilities, enjoying a full and rich life, AND completing your CLTP program online. When I'm not working (and these days that seems to be just about all I am doing), I enjoy reading, movies, opera, local history, walking and cycling.

Lorraine Kelley

North Vancouver, BC
Courses: 102, 105, 106
Lorraine has been the Information Services head and Readers Advisory specialist at the North Vancouver City Library since 2003. She has been tutoring CLTP since 1996 when it was still a correspondence ("snail mail") program. Lorraine has also worked as an Area Manager for Fraser Valley Regional Library, as the Director of the Grand Forks & District Public Library and in elementary and high school libraries. Lorraine moved to Grand Forks way back in 1977 (from Edmonton) and still owns an owner-built home "up the North Fork", to which she might return to live if she ever retires. Lorraine loves to travel and has visited all the continents except South America and Antarctica.
They calleth her Susan, Queen of Stats. And to her they looketh for guidanceth.

Susan Laidlaw

Victoria, BC
Course: 101
I am a librarian working for the Public Library Services Branch in Victoria. I am a Library Consultant, which means that I work with public library directors and board members giving advice on PLSB programs & services and general issues on managing a library and running a board. I am also the "Stats Queen" who is responsible for annual statistics from B.C. public libraries. In 2009 I was heavily involved in running Teen Reading Club (www.teenrc.ca) which is a terrific program for readers aged 13 to 18. Prior to joining PLSB in 2006, I was a branch manager at the Kitchener Public Library System in Ontario - a tremendously rewarding and challenging job. When I am not at work, I have two beautiful, amazing and super-smart preschoolers who keep me very busy every day. In my rather limited spare time I like to read and I like to run (I frequently combine the two through the magic of downloadable Audiobooks and my iPod). CLTP 101 is my first foray into CLTP tutoring. I am looking forward to the course and to getting to know CLTP students from around BC.

If I have to mark one more assignment, I swear I'll jump..!

Dawn Stoppard

Victoria, BC
Course: 203
I am a professional librarian and I work for the Public Library Services Branch as a library consultant. I was hired by PLSB many moons ago to work as a cataloguer and library consultant. I have seen a lot of changes over the last twenty years in BC public libraries, in which changing technology has been a major factor. I remember well the work that went into the old card catalogue! It has been exciting to see all of the changes over the years, and through it all AACR2 has been my Bible. This is my first time working as a tutor for the CLTP program and I am enjoying hearing from students and seeing how they support each other through the CLTP 203 course. When not at work I enjoy puttering in the garden at my home in Victoria, and when I can, I travel.
