Course Description and Outline

CLTP 101: Supervisory Skills for Library Staff
(Formerly: Public Library Administration)

Topics covered include an introduction to public library administration; the roles and responsibilities of library supervisors; communication skills; human resource management, including employee recruitment, selection, training and evaluation; coaching and team-building skills; and other topics related to supervising or working with people.

CLTP 102: Reference and Information Services

The focus of this course is on how to provide effective reference and information services in public libraries. Major topics include the use of standard print and electronic reference tools, resource sharing, including use of the Internet, and the development of effective reference interview techniques.

This course examines principles and practices related to collection development and acquisitions in public libraries.

CLTP 104: Library Services for Children

The children's services course examines the public library needs of children during their pre-teen years. Course work includes presenting a program to a group of children. CLTP students completing both CLTP 104 and CLTP 204, along with the three required program courses, receive a special certificate in Children's and Young Adult Services.

CLTP 202: Legal Information Sources

The focus of this condensed 8 week course on legal information sources is on both print and non-print materials found via local public libraries, as well as referral of questions to other libraries and agencies that provide legal information and/or education.

CLTP 203: Cataloguing and Classifcation

This course introduces students to the steps in cataloguing materials commonly found in public libraries. The course covers descriptive cataloguing using the Concise AACR2, subject cataloguing using the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), and item classification using Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). A strong emphasis will be placed on coding records using MARC.

This course examines young adult literature and the ways in which public libraries can serve young adults. Students are not required to complete CLTP 104 before enrolling in this course. Anyone completing both CLTP 104 and CLTP 204, along with the three required program courses, will receive a special certificate in Children's and Young Adult Services.
